Treatment of diverticulitis consists mainly of:

healing the infection / inflammation with antibiotics

resting the colon by means of bed rest and/or liquid diet
minimizing, preventing complications

In case of severe infection staying in the hospital might be necessary. As mentioned, most cases of diverticulitis are generally treated with antibiotics and a liquid diet. Sometimes surgery is a necessary part of diverticulitis treatment. Surgery is performed to give the the intestines a chance to heal.
